The Waverley Pictorial Dictionary [Complete in Eight Volumes]
London, The Waverley Book Company, Ltd. N.D. [Circa 1930's]. First Edition. Hardcover. Variously paginated. 8vo. measuring 6" x 9". Uniformly bound in publisher's original three-quarters, textured, navy-blue buckram over like boards, bearing elaborate gilt lettering and distinctly art-deco ornamentation to the spines; speckled edges. Black-and-white photographic collage of portraits of the various editors, and contributors, including (most unusually for its time) the presence of at least three women. All volumes richly illustrated with a plethora of black-and-white engravings, photographs, illustrations, drawings, facsimiles, et al. including multiple full-page coloured leaves throughout all eight volumes - a remarkable achievement for its time. Excepting for some very light superficial rubbing to the edges (chiefly confined to the spine ends), the extremities remain remarkably well-preserved with little-to-no wear apparent, contents equally without blemish with bright, clean, and unmarked pages and tight, sound bindings. A most handsome presentation of a most unusual, and scarce period pictorial reference library. Overall, near fine. Scarce in commerce in such lovely condition. .
